Fourth Sunday of Lent – Sunday, 18th March 2012
...Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

“God sent his Son so that through him the world might be saved.” We can become so familiar with a sentence like this that we miss the profound truth in it of how much God loves us and longs for us. We think of faith as meaning our belief in God. It is much more about God’s intense belief in us and in our goodness and beauty and he wants us to come to a knowledge of that too. We have a serious responsibility to one another of constantly bringing that knowledge to each person in every way we can. One of the major tasks for every married couple is to help each other to know how much they are loved and treasured. This is done through affirmation and affection. Parents have this same responsibility towards their children. They can help each one be a truly successful human being by building up their goodness. And in our faith community we help one another by looking out for each other.

Come out of the Darkness

The dark can be an awful place to be. Our imaginations run riot, we think we hear sounds and see figures, our heartbeat quickens and the adrenalin flows! We get notions into our heads - and we know that if we go out into the light, there’s the possibility of being blinded by the truth. And yet, despite how much it scares us and makes us afraid, it seems to appeal to human beings.

In the Gospel, a Pharisee talks to Jesus in the dark about God. Nicodemus has his own notion and image of God, meaning that he misunderstands what Jesus says. This gives Jesus the opportunity to clarify his meaning, and so he says: ‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son.’ Jesus is God’s supreme work of art, given not out of a desire to humiliate or condemn the world, but given as a gift of love. Nicodemus leaves enlightened, re-imagined and restored. The Gospel tells that if we really believe God loves us, we too would come out from our darkness. In the dark, it is difficult to see God, to think of God, to know God. Yet God wants to see us in the light. After all, as the second reading tells us: ‘We are all God’s work of art; created in Christ Jesus to live the good life as from the beginning he had meant us to live it.’ Everyone is a gift, from the complexity of our minds to the deep yearning of our spirits, to the physical make-up of our bodies.

Works of art should not be left to rot away in the darkness, neglected and unseen. If abandoned for a long time, they need sensitive restoration to be saved and brought to life again. Lent gives us the chance to think again about the task of restoration and re-imagining in our lives, allowing God to bring out the best in us. Like all restorers, God needs light to do his work. We should trust his good intentions and come out where he can see us. Who knows, we might even begin to value God’s work ourselves. And if that happens, we might see more of God’s art in other people. To celebrate that we are precious in God’s eyes, God’s work of art, is not human pride - it is true faith. Think about it..... and live it!
